The application of diamond cutting tools in single-mode fiber splicing

Jun,11,2024 << Return list

Single mode fiber is a fiber that transmits only a single fundamental mode within a given operating wavelength. He does not have mode dispersion, so single-mode optical fibers have a relatively wide transmission frequency band and are used for long-distance, high-capacity transmission. The core diameter of single-mode optical fiber is very thin, with a core diameter of only 8-10 μ m and a cladding diameter of 125 μ m. It can be made very long, but for the convenience of manufacturing, transportation, and construction, the factory length of optical fiber is usually 1-6 km.

When conducting fiber optic splicing, the following procedure is generally followed:

(1) Pre install heat shrink tubing with steel wires on the fiber optic cable to reinforce the connection part of the cable;

⑵ Remove the coating layer, use the covering pliers to vertically clamp the optical fiber and quickly peel off the primary and secondary coating layers that are 20mm to 30mm long. Use a cotton ball or lens paper soaked in alcohol to vigorously wipe the optical fiber, wipe the fiber core clean, and make sure that there are no cracks or scratches on the surface of the optical fiber.

Cutting optical fibers and making end faces are the most critical processes in fiber splicing. The completeness of the fiber end face is one of the important reasons for determining the fiber splicing loss.

It requires the prepared end face to be flat, without burrs or defects, and perpendicular to the axis, presenting a smooth and flat mirror area, while maintaining cleanliness and avoiding dust pollution.

There are three methods for preparing end faces:

One method is the scoring method, which uses a cutting blade and a diamond tool to make a scratch on the surface perpendicular to the fiber optic, 10mm away from the coating layer. Gently tap and the fiber optic will naturally fracture at this scratch position,

The second is the cutting pliers method, which uses a self-made handheld simple pliers for cutting operations.

The third method is ultrasonic electric cutting.

These three methods, as long as the equipment is excellent, the operation is appropriate, and the effect of preparing the end face is very good.
